Newark Airport has various pet relief areas for pets. Each terminal has designated areas for pets. There are special sections for pets in both domestic and international flight areas.
Airport check-in and security clearance (TSA process)
You must remove your pet from its carrier when passing through TSA security. The carrier must be placed empty through the X-ray machine. Pets are not passed through the X-ray tunnel. After passing through security, you can place your pet back in its carrier. Before arriving at the security checkpoint, you should have your pet’s leash, the appropriate carrier, and boarding documents ready.
Small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin in an approved soft or hard carrier that fits under the front seat. The airline determines the total weight limit for the carrier and animal. The pet transportation fee varies depending on the airline. The pet transportation fee is between $150 and $300 USD. Pets must be at least 8 weeks old. Sick or injured pets are not accepted. The animal and carrier together must not exceed a certain size limit. The carrier must fit in the space in front of the seat. Don’t forget to check the type of carrier allowed by your airline before your flight.
Large breeds or animals that do not fit in the cabin are transported in the cargo section. Separate check-in and a special crate (IATA approved) are required for cargo.
Domestic (US): A current vaccination card and a health report approved by a veterinarian are required. Airlines may request short-term health forms for domestic flights.
International: Rules vary by country and are more stringent. A USDA-APHIS-approved health certificate, rabies vaccination card, titers, parasite treatment, and import permits are required.
